The first several seasons of the American stunt/dare game show Fear Factor, which premiered on NBC in 2001 and continued there until 2006, were hosted by comedian and UFC commentator Joe Rogan. The current show was created by Endemol USA from the Dutch television series Now or Neverland.
Over the course of the first five seasons of the competition, which offered a $50,000 grand prize as the winner, three men and three women were consistently pitted against one another in a variety of three stunts. In the sixth season, the format of the show was changed to include four opposing teams of two persons who are familiar with one another.
After six seasons and 142 episodes (excluding specials with highlights), NBC cancelled Fear Factor in 2006. The show would later make a brief comeback in 2011 for a nine-episode run.
Rapper and actor Ludacris hosted the MTV revival of the show in 2017, which aired for two seasons (thirty-three episodes) before being cancelled in 2018. Since then, the show has given rise to other spin-offs, developing its own media brand.
